What does it mean to say that Development is Sustainable ? If development is Sustainable can it go on forever? Can growth continue forever? If growth has to end at some point, how do we know our current economic systems are sustainable? What does Sustainable Development have to do with Limits to Growth , a Steady State Economy , a Circular Economy , Capitalism , Socialism , Communism , Fascism , the World-System , etc., etc.? So many questions, so much verbal confusion! Goals imply measurability and measurability implies we should be able to gage our current progress. Somehow, in 2026, it does not seem that we are making progress toward a Sustainable Future even if we don't know what that really means.
